I. Dear Reader,
Been a long week, work-wise, so no preamble from me. Enjoy the links!
Yours recoveringly,
Thomas
II. Media of the Week
- Aaron King spends this episode of RTFM just reading out a game called The Tome of Neverworld, a 90s RPG that has a really weird, interesting voice.
- On Yes Indie’d, I speak to Luke Jordan of Games From The Wildwood about Grand Guignol and Harvest, their two new games published by Possum Creek. Grand Guignol is queer gothic horror of monsters and modernity. Harvest is blood-soaked folk horror tragedy that got me excited enough to organise a game and so I’m playing it right now.
- Cozy RPG Reviews has a nice look at Fabula Ultima, the JRPG-inspired fantasy game.
- You too can support the newsletter on patreon!
- If you’ve released a new game on itch.io this month, let me know through this form so I can potentially include it in the end of the month round-up.
III. Links of the Week
- Sean McCoy has a short retrospective on seven years of Mothership: “Seven years ago today, we launched Mothership at Origins Game Fair 2018. We had a short-run zine, we only printed 50 copies total, and our marketing consisted of a single post on G+ (rip).”
- Split/Party writes about an ambitious new game that is doing a haunted House of Leaves-style approach to its text: “I believe You Will Die In This Place is one of important works of the artform… ever?”
- Jen of Owl Knight Games has another nice edition of her monthly newsletter that talks about, among other things, the idea that she makes “girl games”.
- This led to this interesting response from Sarah Doom about the frustration of making girl games in general.
- On the RPG subreddit, there was an interesting discussion that unfolded after a player from China posted about the culture shock of “leveling up” being a big deal in D&D having come from a culture inspired by older editions of Call of Cthulhu.
- It’s KiwiRPG Week once again and the organizers have a whole website and showcase of games from Aotearoa / New Zealand.
From the archive:
- The Hex Culture blog had a great post about building settings based on the lore you find interesting using a book called Situational Narrative Design: “How do you write a setting that is well suited for players interpreting and thinking about? How do you write a setting that provides them information they can act on? I think a possible way is to structure it around interpretive moves.” (Issue 100, July 2022)
